★ Book Review ★ CROW MARY by Kathleen Grissom!

by Kathleen Grissom
Publication Date: June 6, 2023
Publisher: Atria Books
Paperback: 364 pages

Cove Member Monica Reviews:

In Crow Mary Kathleen Grissom introduces us to Goes First, a 19th-century Crow woman who marries a white man named Abe Farwell. Grissom shows what life was like for many Native American women of the time through the gallant and resilient wife of a fur trader.

The Cypress Hills massacre is seen through Mary's eyes, as she witnessed the carnage of the Nakoda and the unspeakable violation of its women. Mary was powerless to stop it, and it destroyed her husband and her marriage.

We also experience the justice system through the eyes of Crow Mary, witnessing the separation of children from their parents, bound for Indian schools. There is much for readers to learn from this well rendered story of Mary Farwell's life.

The author was kind enough to send our book club a galley for review, and I truly enjoyed reading this novel, getting to know the steadfast and courageous Mary Farwell, Goes First. I can highly recommend this book, along with the author's other memorable works, The Kitchen House and Glory Over Everything.

Praise:

"Crow Mary is a richly detailed story of a woman caught between two cultures. You’ll be captivated by Mary’s strength and determination as she struggles to save her family and her people from destruction. A compassionate and deeply satisfying novel." —Sandra Dallas, New York Times best-selling author
