After being attacked on the way home from work, Vivie Harris decides that she will never feel safe in the Bronx again. She decides that moving to the Adirondacks will provide her and her pets a quiet life. A local diner lets her use her pie-making skills and make friends with long time residents.
Vivie’s sense of security is shattered one night when she hears a crash. The thief is a hungry orphaned bear cub who devours several of her cooling pies. The bear cub’s mother has been killed by poachers and the cub has injuries. Vivie can identify with the cub and wants to nurse her back to health.
Liam Walsh, who is with the DEC, is a man who lives by the rules and not sure that Vivie’s overriding desire to rehabilitate the cub is for the best. They finally come to a compromise.
Liam, who served in combat in the Mideast, has his own trauma from the past. His way of dealing with it is not getting too close to anyone, changing jobs and moving every few years.
Author Karen Rock does a marvelous job of slowly revealing the past both characters struggle with. It is easy for the reader to empathize with their situations.
This novel is part of the Harlequin Heartwarming series. It certainly fits in that category as we follow along with Button, the bear cub’s, development. With romance novels, the reader always gets a happily ever after, but Karen Rock makes the journey to that point poignant and upbeat.
RAISING THE STAKES is my first book by Karen Rock, but it won’t be my last. With all the stress and anxiety in the world, I need to escape on a regular basis to a world of romance and lovingkindness.On Goodreads
